The Transformation of Arebbe Tradition as a Form of Hindu-Buddhist and Islamic Cultural Assimilation

Abstract

The Arebbe tradition is the result of cultural assimilation that reflects a blend of religious beliefs and practices transmitted across generations. However, inherited traditions are not always preserved in their original form, nor are they necessarily maintained indefinitely. Only values or practices perceived as beneficial and relevant to contemporary community needs tend to survive. This study aims to explore the form of cultural assimilation embedded within the Arebbe tradition among the people of Dusun Tamanan, Prenduan Village, Pragaan District, Sumenep Regency, Madura. It also seeks to identify the social and religious impacts of this tradition on the local community. Employing a qualitative research method with a phenomenological approach, data were obtained through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that (1) prior to the establishment of the Arebbe tradition, the local community practiced sontengan and sonsonan, syncretic rituals influenced by Hindu-Buddhist elements through Javanese traditions, involving offerings locally known as bhe’sabhe’. These were gradually assimilated and transformed into the Islamic-influenced Arebbe tradition. (2) The assimilation process is partial, as the purpose of Arebbe has shifted from solely honoring deceased ancestors to also including prayers for the living, such as children or family members facing significant life events. The implication of this study suggests that Arebbe functions not only as a cultural heritage but also as a dynamic medium of spiritual expression and social solidarity, adaptable to the evolving religious consciousness of the community.
